Swimming is defined as a physical activity in which the body is pushed through water using the movements of the arms and legs; this causes the body to float naturally in the water, and swimming can be a sport practiced by some or it may be a recreational activity for people. Swimming has been known for a long history extending back to 2500 years BC; where it was practiced in Egypt, and swimming was known in later civilizations such as the Assyrian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. Swimming was part of the combat training known to the ancient Greeks and Romans, and it was even part of the curriculum for males in the primary education stage. In terms of competitive sports, men's swimming was included as one of the Olympic games in 1896 AD, followed by women's swimming in 1912 AD.
Olympiad
Swimming has not been absent from the modern Olympic Games since the first edition in 1896 in Athens until today. Women participated in swimming competitions for the first time in the fifth edition in 1912 in Stockholm. Swimming is considered one of the most popular sports in the Olympic Games and contains the second largest number of events after athletics in the first four editions of the Olympics. Swimming competitions were not held in pools, but were practiced in open water. Pools were used for the first time in the Stockholm Games in 1912. In 1968, it was decided to add a new event for women, which is the 800-meter race, as some saw that women do not have the physical ability for such long races. However, starting from the next Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020), women will participate in the 1,500-meter race, equal to men, for the first time. Since the Beijing Games in 2008, the open water marathon event has been added for both sexes.
